Controlled explosion carried out on 'suspicious item' found on Edinburgh street near Scottish Parliament

A controlled explosion has been carried out on a 'suspicious package' on Holyrood Road in Edinburgh.

A bomb squad were called to the street near the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

A cordon is currently in place and bomb disposal experts examining the item.

Nearby bars, a university building and a homeless unit have all been evacuated.

A police spokesperson said: "Police were called around 1:35pm this afternoon to reports of a suspicious item found on Holyrood Road, Edinburgh.

"Police are at the scene.

"A cordon has been put in place as a precaution.

"The EOD will be attending to examine the item."
