Ross County have torn up midfielder Stewart Murdoch's contract, the Dingwall side have announced.

The 26-year-old has recently been linked with a move to relegated Dundee United and according to reports is now inching towards a Tannadice deal.

Former Falkirk youngster Murdoch joined the Staggies from Fleetwood last summer on a two-year deal.

But he has now been told his time is up at County by boss Jim McIntyre, clearing the way for him to join up with new United boss Ray McKinnon as the Terrors look to escape the Ladbrokes Championship at the first attempt.

Ross County confirmed Murdoch's departure in a statement, saying: "We can confirm today that midfielder Stewart Murdoch has been released from his contract here at the Global Energy Stadium.

"Murdoch, who was contracted to the end of the 2016/17 season, leaves the club after making 34 appearances since his debut on the 1st August 2015.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank Stewart for his contribution since arriving in Dingwall last summer and wish him all the very best for the future."
