A red flare sighting in the Cromarty Firth sparked a lifeboat search effort.

Crew from Invergordon were dispatched after the signal was spotted around 2 o'clock this morning.

The lifeboat searched the inner Cromarty Firth, starting from Invergordon, heading west to the Cromarty Bridge on the north side of the channel, before carrying out a search on the South Side from Shoreton to Ferryton, back towards Invergordon.

The search was stood down within 2 hours after nothing was found.
