The gifts were donated to MFR Cash for Kids Mission Christmas at the Inverness Cathedral collection box.

The Cathedral, on Ardross Street, has an open-door policy to allow for worship at all hours of the day, which also allows gifts to be donated outside of working hours.

It is unknown how many gifts were taken, but it's being described as a 'significant amount'.

The Very Reverend Sarah Murray said: 'People put those things into the boxes knowing that they're going to those who really need them. It is absolutely devastating at this time of year when people are making every effort to be so generous and so kind.

'We are aware working with Cash For Kids throughout the year the number of people that are in need and how much more at Christmas they're aware of the differences of not being able to provide, and so appeals like this if more people can be helped then that's for the good.

'We're not sure how many gifts have gone missing but it is a significant amount for us to notice.'

As of 30 November 2018, MFR Cash for Kids have received more than 2,700 applications for help across the Highland and Moray area.
