Power cuts on Shetland declared major incident

Local residents are being urged to stay at home and check on neighbours

A major incident has been declared on Shetland with the Scottish Government warning thousands of homes are facing days without power.

SSEN Distributions is working to restore supplies to around 2,800 homes cut off after snow and ice caused "extensive damage" to overhead cables yesterday.

Police say the body of a woman has been found in an outbuilding at her home as the freezing temperatures continue.

A spokesperson for the force said: "The body of a woman was found near to an outbuilding in the Ollaberry area of Shetland at around 1.30pm on Tuesday, 13 December, 2022.

"Enquiries into the death are ongoing but it is not believed to be suspicious.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
