Ross County's Simon Power will aim to get more game-time following his late appearance in the Staggies 4-1 victory over Montrose in Saturday's BetFred Cup.

The Irish midfielder came on Josh Mullin on 78 minutes, with Mullin earlier opening the scoring in County's first competitive fixture of the new 2019-20 season.

For the 21-year-old Power, on loan from newly promoted Norwich City, it's all about matches at this point in his career.

"I played for numerous clubs back in Ireland, I'm from a place on the outskirts of Dublin, I've played with youth sides in the international set-up, but I was out on loan at FC Dordrecht"

"It was the second-tier of Dutch football and it went well, it was a step up in terms standard - bit more of a challenge - and everyone knows about the football over there"

"With Norwich last season, from a slow start they quickly found their form and were flying, creeping up the table and then ended up finishing top"

Obviously with the Canaries securing their place in the Premier League it left a bit of a dilemma for Power when it came to his short-term future.

"From my point of view, it was hard as I might've had a better chance of getting in their team if they had stayed in the Championship, but it was a tricky one and there was a lot playing in my mind"

Tuesday sees the second round of group games in the BetFred Cup. County travel to play Brechin City in Group B. Inverness kick-off their campaign, with their first competitive match in Group D, they take on Peterhead at Balmoor. Elgin city in Group C are at Alloa.

After one spell in the Dutch second-tier, Simon Power believes he can flourish in Dingwall, given his opportunity for top flight football in the SPFL Premiership.

"One of the main reasons I'm here is because I feel it would suit my style of play better (than the Netherlands) as I'm very quick and direct”

“I like to get in behind, and I think both gaffers got me in for that reason, because I'm not sure they've that many players in that role to quickly get upfield and penetrate defences"

"We're going to be coming up against all the big clubs in the Premier League – your Celtic, Rangers, Hibs and the like - and we'll have to sit in our blocks looking for that quick counter-attack, so that's where I hope my speed will come into its own"
