The Scottish Government has admitted £78 million has been spent on development work for the dualling of the A96 between Aberdeen and Inverness.

A review of the project's climate is currently underway as part of a coalition deal between the SNP and the Greens at the Scottish Parliament.

The findings are not expected until the end of the year.

North East Conservative MSP Liam Kerr said: “It’s scandalous the SNP could potentially waste millions of pounds of taxpayers money by winding back on clear promises they have made to the north-east - all to appease their Green coalition partners.

“The A96 needs to be dualled to give drivers a safer and improved journey between Aberdeen and Inverness, drive the north-east economy forward and ensure our emergency services can get where they need without delays."

The Scottish Government said it's committed to improving the A96 corridor, but the review is "sensible good governance for an investment for major investment of this kind"
