A fleet of submarine hunting planes are now complete after the P-8A Poseidon jet landed in Moray earlier today.

RAF Lossiemouth confirmed the ZP809 arrived at the base earlier this morning.

There are now nine planes based in Moray, after the first one landed almost two years ago.

An RAF Lossiemouth spokesperson said: "We are delighted to announce the arrival of our ninth Poseidon MRA Mk1 Maritime Patrol aircraft.

"The final addition to the RAF Poseidon fleet, ZP809’s arrival closes the door on our P-8A journey.

"The aircraft will continue providing cutting edge maritime patrol capabilities and will work side-by-side with the Royal Navy to secure the seas around the United Kingdom and abroad."

The P-8A Poseidon is fully equipped with state of the art sensors and weapon systems.

The fleet marks the fifth generation of submarine hunters protecting UK waters, with the former Nimrod fleet well-known to Moray.

It was withdrawn from service in 2010, but now a major investment in infrastructure has paved the way for the Poseidon's arrival, with hangars being built at RAF Lossiemouth, along with improvements to the runway there.
