Multiple drivers left stranded as section of A9 closed amidst 'treacherous' conditions

Motorists in the Far North have been left stranded as snowy weather continues to cause havoc.

The A9 has been closed in both directions between Helmsdale and Dunbeath due to "impassable conditions."

Drivers left stranded have been urged to stay in their vehicles with police adding earlier this afternoon that there was "no estimated timescale for when the issue would be resolved.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The A9 between Helmsdale and Dunbeath is currently closed due to impassable conditions, and we have resources on the A9 in the area of Berriedale where there are multiple stranded motorists.

"Bear Scotland are aware and are making efforts to try and clear the road, however, in the meantime, for those who remain stranded, we advise that you stay in your vehicles and keep yourself safe and warm until such time as the road conditions are improved.

"Should any of the stranded motorists require any emergency assistance above and beyond the need for their vehicle to be freed from the snow, then please call the appropriate emergency service.

"There are no estimated timescales at this time for when this current situation will be resolved. In the meantime it is advised that all motorists avoid the area.

"Further south, the snow gates on Struie Road (B9176) are also being closed due to snow.

"Driving conditions across the North Highlands remain treacherous so please plan ahead as there is a high risk of disruption."

This comes after officers warned drivers in North Highland to consider whether their journeys were essential as the A836 between Lairg and Tongue, through Altnaharra was closed.

A snow plough left the road at Loyal, between Altnaharra & Tongue earlier today. Highland Council said the crew were safe and uninjured.

Thousands of pupils in Highland and Aberdeenshire had another day off due to the conditions today, while in Moray a handful of schools were either closed or had delayed openings.

An amber weather warning for snow across areas north of Inverness ends at 6pm tonight, with a further yellow warning across many parts of the country in place until 3pm tomorrow.
