There has been travel chaos at a Highland airport as a "technical issue" with air traffic control equipment left multiple flights cancelled or delayed.

Services due to depart to Amsterdam, Heathrow and Gatwick were all delayed, while flights to Stornoway, Sumburgh, and Bristol have all been cancelled.

Arrival flights from Stornoway and Sumburgh have been cancelled, while those coming from Amsterdam, Sumburgh and Luton were delayed.

We understand the issue is not fire related.

Highlands and Airports Ltd (HIAL) who manage Inverness Airport have apologised for the inconvenience.

HIAL have confirmed the issue is now resolved and the airport is open.

A HIAL spokesperson: “The technical issue is now resolved and Inverness airport is open for flights.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and advise that passengers still check with airlines as the disruption may impact flights today.”
