Moray commemorations to remember D Day on 80th anniversary
People in Findhorn, both military and civilian, have remembered the sacrifice of those in 1944 who gave their lives in the landings at Normandy
With the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings, those in Moray have remembered the sacrifice made by those taking part in the 1944 landings.
In Findhorn, those from RAF Lossiemouth and the Royal Engineers from Kinloss were among those participating in the commemorations.
A wreath was laid off Culbin Sands, where in the training for the Normandy landings, a tank sunk claiming the life of a soldier.
Speaking to MFR News, Moray Lord Lieutenant Seymour Monro said Moray beaches was chosen because of their similarities with Normandy.
He said much of Moray, Nairn, Inverness and Ross-shire was a hive of activity as the 3rd Infantry Division took up residence. During the training, many troops were stationed at Fort George with ships moored off Dornoch.
Maj Gen Monro said around five or six rehearsals were conducted, involving warships, landing craft, tanks and artillery, one of which resulted in a fatality in a duplex drive Valentine tank.
