SNP Councillors have taken control of Moray Council as a minority administration two weeks after the collapse of the Independent / Tory coalition.

Shona Morrison from the Fochabers Lhanbryde Ward has taken up the role of Convener, the first woman in the history of Moray Council to be the region’s Civic Leader, and the Council Leader is Graham Leadbitter, who represents Elgin City South.

Following his appointment as Council Leader, Graham Leadbitter said:

“The last few weeks have been very challenging for Moray Council, for the staff and for the people of Moray. I am proud to lead a strong, confident team of hard-working SNP councillors who care deeply about the communities that elected them, about Moray as a whole and about the staff and volunteers who deliver public services throughout Moray"

“We know there are challenges ahead and we know that we must work with other councillors in this chamber to deliver the policy and budget decisions that are required to move Moray Council forward."

Following her appointment as Convener, Shona Morrison said:

“I am honoured to have been elected as Convener of Moray Council and I am especially proud to be the first woman in Moray’s history to hold the post"

“Women remain underrepresented in local authorities with only 7 authorities having women convenors and women making up only 27% of all councillors throughout Scotland"

“With this appointment we move toward greater equality in local government and I look forward to working hard to represent and showcase Moray"
