A man and a woman have died in separate house fires in the north over the weekend.

The woman died following a blaze at a home on Pulteney Street, in Ullapool, Ross-shire, on Saturday afternoon.

The man lost his life following a fire at a house on Duke Street in Golspie, Sutherland, which broke out before 11am on Sunday.

The deceased, who have not yet been formally named, were the only residents in the properties.

In both cases the cause of the fires is being treated as unexplained'' at this stage.

Police Scotland said their inquiries into the incidents are continuing.

Earlier on Sunday, a man was taken to hospital and several other people were treated for minor injuries after a fire broke out at a block of flats in Dundee.

Emergency services were called to the block on Kinghorne Road at around 8.50am.

A number of surrounding roads were closed while firefighters brought the blaze under control.

Police said a number of people were treated for minor injuries at the scene and one man has been taken to Ninewells Hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the fire remains unexplained at this time and a joint police and fire investigation is to be carried out,'' the force said in a statement.
