LISTEN: Uncertain future for Fort George with no assurances given

Defence minister says "Scotland, like the rest of the UK, must expect some sites to close"

The future of historic Fort George remains uncertain after ministers refused to give assurances it would stay open.

The large 18th-century fortress near Ardersier is home to 3 SCOTS the Black Watch, but there are still fears the base could be closed as the Ministry of Defence review of its estate.

SNP MP Drew Hendry said this:-

But Defence minister Mark Lancaster told the Commons the MoD was continuing a review of its estate "to ensure it's smaller and more sustainable''

He added: "This will allow us to focus on delivering future defence capability, and has enabled the considerable investment in sites such as Lossiemouth and Faslane"

"Whilst no decision has been made on the future of Fort George, Scotland will continue to be a vital home for our Armed Forces"

"However, Scotland, like the rest of the UK, must expect some sites to close, as well as investment in those other locations.''

A recent letter from Mr Mundell said he could not confirm at this stage the military's future use of the barracks.

However, it also said the future of the Black Watch (3 SCOTS) battalion was not under threat.
