There was standing room only at Inshes Primary last night as locals in Milton of Leys met to debate plans for a new prison at Balvonie Braes.

The Scottish Prison Service say they need to build a new facility in the Highlands and have earmarked the site as a potential option with Highland Council.

The proposals have sparked an opposition petition which have already attracted more than 1,000 signatures and last night a public meeting was attended by more than 300 residents.

A final decision is still to be made on the subject, with Highland Council’s planning committee still looking at all available options.
