The move by Moray Council aims to make smaller rural schools more sustainable.

More primary schools in Moray could soon share head teachers.

Moray Council will vote on proposals to increase so called 'paired headships' next week.

It would take the pairs of primaries sharing a head teacher from 3 to 12.

If approved, the proposals would go out to consultation, with a possible start date in the 2016-17 school year.

The primary schools currently paired are Tomintoul/Glenlivet, Inveravon/Knockando and Portknockie/Portgordon.

The proposals are that Cullen/Findochty, Millbank/Portessie, Logie/Dyke, Alves/Dallas, Rothiemay/Crossroads, Newmill/Botriphnie, Burghead/Hopeman, Aberlour/Rothes and Mortlach/Craigellachie would also share a head teacher.

MFR Reporter Derek Ferguson speaks with Moray Council Director of Education Laurence Findlay about the move...

In a report to the committee, director of education and social care Laurence Findlay said: "It can prove very difficult to recruit head teachers to small rural schools and even to slightly larger schools for a variety of reasons.

"The draft policy aspires to create a more attractive and progressive carer pathway for aspiring school leaders which may alleviate some of our current recruitment challenges at senior management level."

"This has been an aspiration of the service for many years and would have a significant impact on the service's capacity for improvement," he added.
