Free late afternoon parking is to be introduced at an Elgin car park on a trial basis.

Charges will be waived after 3pm at the Batchen Lane multi-storey for six months beginning in the early summer.

The move was approved today by Moray Council's economic development and infrastructure services committee following an approach by the Elgin BID which pointed to a similar initiative in Falkirk which had proved successful in terms of increased footfall in the town centre.

A report to committee said: "Officers have identified Batchen Lane multi-storey as a car park which is under used but is close to the town centre."

It added: "Elgin BID will be asked to seek feedback from its members and to conduct a shopping survey to assess if there has been any noticeable increase in footfall or increase in trade."
