Councillor Helen Carmichael is the first woman to hold the post in 600 years.

A woman has been appointed Provost of Inverness for the first time in 600 years.

Councillor Helen Carmichael is the only female to hold the civic post.

She will also chair the City of Inverness Area Committee.

Councillor Carmichael said: "I am honoured and delighted to have been chosen by the City Councillors to represent the people of Inverness City and Area and I gladly accept the position on Provost and Leader of Inverness City and Area.

"It is a privilege to have this opportunity to serve as Provost. I eagerly look forward to the challenges ahead."
