Train services were suspended and school pupils at both Tarradale Primary and Dingwall Academy were kept indoors until the area was declared safe.
It took workmen more than two hours to stop the leak and around 260 homes were left without gas overnight while engineers monitored the situation.
MFR News has been speaking to Richard Diamond from ES Pipelines:
A spokesman from the Scottish Gas Network’s told MFR News: “A gas main was damaged by a third party in Muir of Ord yesterday. Our engineers attended the scene in our capacity as the local provider of the national gas emergency service to make the situation safe. The gas escape was made safe at 4.30pm.
“The local gas network in Muir of Ord is owned and operated by ES Pipelines, an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT). The network at this location is the responsibility of ES Pipelines however we are providing the emergency response for them.
“Some customers’ supplies were restored last night and we will be continuing our efforts today to restore the supplies to the remaining properties as quickly as possible.
“We appreciate that it’s not easy being without a gas supply and thank Muir of Ord residents for their patience while we’re working to restore supplies.
