Woodcutters from far and wide look to chip-in with unique creations

Published 2nd Sep 2016

Woodcarvers from across the globe are travelling to the Highlands for one of their favourite competitions.

Carve Carrbridge has more than 20 log sculptors taking part and attracts around 3,000 spectators. Carvers have only a chainsaw and four hours to turn a log into a piece of art.

Pete Bowsher from Moffat is returning to defend his title having won the competition seven times.

Carve Carrbridge organiser, Gavin Gerard said: “We have an amazing line up of British and International top carvers again this year and they will all be out to topple Pete Bowsher – I don’t see the other competitors letting him make it four in a row for the Claymore Trophy! The competition is going to be really stiff and probably one of the most exciting years to date."

Another organiser Katrina Stirling explains the methodology behind some of the imaginative carvings:-

Carver Simon Archer is doing a sponsored beard shave to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support, but swapping his chainsaw for a razor on this occasion.

The Speyside Pipe band will be drowning out the noisy chainsaws with some music, and a ceilidh in the Village Hall in the evening brings the day to a close.
