The future of Fort George, home of the Black Watch in the Highlands, could be under threat with the MoD looking to cut their estate by a third.

Fort George was built following the Battle of Culloden and it is currently the base for 3Scots Black Watch with around 500 personnel.

However SNP's Keith Brown has reacted angrily to any move which could see further defence cuts hit the north.

"We had some information picked up from discussions, and as it wasn't definite, I thought the best thing to do was write to the Ministry of Defence to find out what was going on"

With the MoD looking to making savings of ÂŁ500 million Mr Brown is determined there should be no streamlining in a fragile area which could be more susceptible to a major loss such as the garrison of Fort George.

"I had a fairly constructive talk with Mark Lancaster one of the defence ministers and he confirmed that no decisions have been made on Fort George or any other Scottish sites"

"However he did explain that there was a strategy aimed at reducing 30% of the MOD estate across the whole of the UK"
