Five firefighters are in Raigmore hospital in Inverness this afternoon after the fire engines they were traveling in left the road at Newlands of Culloden early this morning.

MFR News has been told by Scottish Fire and Rescue that the two appliances were responding to a road traffic collision at Cantraybruich on the B9006 Inverness to Nairn road at the time of the incident.

Icy road conditions are being blamed.

It's been confirmed by the emergency service that the five firefighters are not suffering with life threatening injuries.

This morning's incident has left the local fire and rescue service without two fire engines on duty.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "At 07.03 on Saturday 6 February, Inverness control were advised of a road traffic accident on the B9006 at Cantraybruich. They subsequently dispatched two appliances from Inverness fire station to attend.

"At 07.16, while en-route to the incident under blue light conditions, both appliances left the road at Newlands of Culloden.

"Six crew members were able to exit the vehicles. Two crew members were, however, trapped inside an appliance for a period before being released by colleagues."

Fire bosses have temporarily replaced the applicants with one from Aberdeen, and the other one from Dundee.
