An Inverness man's been jailed for two years after robbing a corner shop in the city.

34 year old James Wilson stole 30 pounds from the store in Greig Street last November.

He terrified the shop assistant with a 6 inch knife as he tried to get to the till, but was only able to grab a couple of 10 pound notes.

Wilson was then chased by a passer-by, but managed to escape.

When police tracked the criminal down he admitted to taking the money in order to pay back drug debts.

“When interviewed by police, he admitted committing the offence saying he was in debt to drug dealers and that was why he stole the money.

“He hid for a time before changing his clothing. During the interview he expressed his shame several times and said he would not have hurt the shopkeeper.”

Defence lawyer John MacColl said: “My client was in the throes of a serious drug addicition at the time and there is a recognition that he needs help.

“This was an offence committed as an act of desperation. He was being threatened by various individuals at the time if he did not pay back his drug debts.”

Sentence had been deferred for a background report on July 7 when Wilson was remanded in custody. His jail sentence was backdated to that date.

Wilson will re-appear on August 12.

He was sentenced to 2 years behind bars at Inverness Sheriff Court earlier today.
