The First Minister has announced that his in-laws are “safe and back home” after they were able to flee Gaza.

In a post to social media site X, Humza Yousaf said: “We are, of course, elated, but mu father-in-law said, ‘My heart is broken in two, and my mum, son & grandchildren in Gaza’.

“He then broke down telling me how hard it was saying goodbye to them.”

Elizabeth and Maged El-Nakla, the parents of Mr Yousaf’s wife Nadia, were among 92 British nationals able to pass through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt on Friday (November 3).

The couple, from Dundee, were in Gaza visiting relatives when the conflict erupted last month, and since then, Mr Yousaf has been sharing updates on the family’s situation, including that they had to drink seawater due to a lack of clean resources.

Mr Yousaf thanked people for their good wishes, adding: “This has been a traumatic few weeks.

“I can’t begin to tell you the impact it has had on Nadia and our family, particularly my in-laws.

“I’m sure they will tell their story in time.

“In the meantime, we ask that their privacy is respected.”
