Human remains have been found at a house which caught fire in Aberdeenshire last week, police said.

The alarm was raised just before 5am on Thursday after the blaze broke out in a house in Gardenstown.

A man was taken to hospital after the fire in the seaside village, while a woman who was inside the building was reported missing.

Police Scotland said human remains had been recovered from the property on Tuesday afternoon.

While formal identification has not taken place, the family of the woman have been made aware.

Police said specialist teams will continue to work at the scene and a joint investigation is being carried out with the fire service.
