Huge Gas Field Approved for Development

A three billion pound investment's been announced for the North Sea.

It's just a week since Maersk announced the early closure of the Janice Field, and 200 potential job cuts.

This morning it's a very different story - they've got approval to develop the Culzean Gas Field.

It's the largest new field discovered in the past decade, and it'll safeguard 6,000 UK jobs, and create 400 new ones.

Production's expected to start in 2019 and continue for at least 13 years.

At its peak, it's expected to supply 5% of the total UK demand.

Chancellor George Osborne says the announcement sends a clear signal that the North Sea IS open for business.
