Highland bridges set to close as Storm Eowyn hits Scotland

Three Highland bridges are due to close today as Storm Eowyn hits the country.

A rare 'danger to life' red weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for the central belt, South of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Across a the North and North East of Scotland, an amber alert will be in place between from 1pm today until 6am tomorrow.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice covering most of the country will begin at midnight and end at 11am tomorrow

The Kessock Bridge is set to close to all vehicles between 1pm today and 3am tomorrow.

From 4pm today until 3am tomorrow, Dornoch Bridge is set close while Cromarty Bridge is due to be closed for "brief spells" between 5pm tonight and 2am tomorrow.

Met Office has extended its red weather warning to cover more of Scotland.

The warning, in place until 5pm on Friday, now covers as far south as Lockerbie on the south-west of Scotland.

The Met Office made the announcement at around 11am on X.

Hundreds of schools and nurseries across Scotland are closed today as First Minister John Swinney warned residents not to travel.

Train operator ScotRail has suspended all services across Scotland on Friday, saying it "would not be safe to operate passenger services", with Calmac and Western ferry services also cancelled because of weather conditions.
