Police have appealed for any sightings of a German hillwalker feared missing in the Highlands.

Goffredo Bondanelli, 56, was last seen in Fort William on May 3 boarding a train to Lochailort, where he was due to begin a five-day, 76km (47 mile) walk to Glenfinnan.

It is thought he was due to return to Fort William or travel to Arrochar by train on May 8.

Lochaber police said the experienced walker would have been camping out on hills including Coire na Cnamha, Lochan Feith Easian and Sgurr an Utha, and possibly walking on the nearby A830 at times.

A spokesman said: "Officers are currently searching in the areas between Lochailort and Glenfinnan on his route, but welcome more information about Mr Bondanelli's movements or contact with other walkers.

"He is described as being around 5ft 10ins, of an athletic build with dark and grey hair, and possibly stubble or light beard. He is wearing dark outdoor clothing.

"Police would urge anyone who is wallking or taking part in outdoor pursuits in the Lochaber/Argyll area to make contact if they have seen or had contact with a man matching Mr Bondanelli's description, or if they have any information to assist the search."
