A man has been found dead after a fire in Inverness City Centre.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 2.50am on Wednesday, 14 April, officers were called to reports of a fire within a property on Queensgate.

"Emergency services attended, and the body of a 57-year-old man was found within the property. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire is ongoing."

The street was closed this morning to let fire crews tackle the blaze, but it has now been re-opened.

Derek Wilson is the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s Local Senior Officer for Highland.

He said: "We were alerted at 2.26am on Wednesday, April 14 to a fire within a property at Queensgate, Inverness.

"Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances to the scene.

"Sadly, a man passed away and our thoughts are very much with his family, friends and the wider community at this difficult time.

"A joint investigation alongside Police Scotland colleagues is ongoing."
