Emergency declared after Military plane hits bird

A full-scale emergency was declared at Stornoway Airport after a military aircraft struck a bird on Saturday.

A full-scale emergency was declared at Stornoway Airport after a military aircraft struck a bird on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to the airfield when the alarm was raised. Fire, ambulance, police, coastguard and lifeboat crews attended the scene.

The military aircraft, with three people on board, was able to land safely shortly after.

Exercise Joint Warrior, a military exercise that involves numerous warships, aircraft, marines and troops, is currently taking place. The training includes increased military activity off the Western Isles and the west coast of Scotland.
