Elgin City look to get off-and-running against Brechin

Played two, lost two is the Black & White's record as they head into their third League Cup Group B match.

After a 3-1 defeat to St Johnstone and a 3-0 loss at Falkirk, Elgin City prepare to welcome Brechin City to Borough Briggs.

It's seven years since the Black & White's last encounter with Brechin - also in the League Cup - which ended in a 4-0 defeat.

Despite Tuesday's scoreline against the Bairns, Elgin manager Jim Weir said there were some decent signs:

"Very disappointed to lose the game 3-0, especially the late goal which took the shine off our performance second-half, as we hoped to make it a bit of a grandstand finish"

"Falkirk are a good side and kept the ball well, but I was pleased with the work out - even though we didn't create too much - but there are signs we've got things to look forward to this season"

The start to the season hasn't been ideal for Elgin as they look to get up-to-speed as quickly as possible, having only played a handful of friendlies.

"I think a lot of clubs are in the same boat, starting two weeks earlier we had to use the first two League Cup games as pre-season games to get us ready for the new domestic season which is our priority"

"Sadly the draw hasn't been too kind to us as we've faced the two full-time teams in the opening two games, so it could've been better had it been the other way round - no disrespect to our other opponents"

"I think now we have to start thinking about gametime and looking to get the best system for the League Two campaign ahead"

"The St Johnstone game saw a good reaction at half-time, but we obviously lost 3-1, but this is a different game. The expectation's a bit greater from our home fans, even though Brechin City are a league above us"

Following the departure of Mark Hurst back to his parent club St Johnstone, Stewart Black has been given the no.1 jersey at the start of season 2016-17. Last season Black made just four appearances, but Jim Weir is keen to see how the goalkeeper fares, given his chance:

"The last couple of games he's done fairly well, but until we feel there's a need to push him, we said we'd give him a chance and at the moment he's done okay"

"Obviously Stevie Dunn can't sit on the bench forever. It's up to Blackie as to how that goes, we probably still need someone to come in - either as no.1 or to push him for the jersey - that's no disrespect to Blackie and that would happen in any other position in the outfield"
