Dundee runner Eilish McColgan has won the gold medal in the 10km event of the Great Scottish Run - setting a new British and European women's 10,000 metres road race record.

The distance runner won the race with a time of 30 minutes 18 seconds.

It means Eilish has taken a second off her own record set earlier this year at the Great Manchester Run.

It's the first time the Great Scottish Run has gone ahead since the pandemic.

A hero's welcome

The race marks the end of an incredibly successful season for the runner.

Eilish set a new Commonwealth Games record when she took gold in the 10,000 metres at Birmingham 2022, and also took bronze in the 5,000 metres. She then secured two further medals at the European Championships Munich 2022.

This afternoon, she will be welcomed back to her home city of Dundee along with fellow Commonwealth gold medallist Sam Hickey.

Lord Provost Bill Campbell is hosting a civic reception for the runner and boxer. He said: “The nation was thrilled to see Eilish and Sam excel on such a prestigious stage as the Commonwealth Games this summer.

“It is fitting that the city of Dundee recognises their achievements and gives people the chance to share in the moment as well."
