Tributes have been paid to swimmer Duncan Scott as he became Scotland's most decorated Olympian

Scott claimed his eighth Olympic medal by bagging silver in the men's 200 metres individual medley final on Friday, putting him ahead of Sir Chris Hoy.

Scottish First Minister John Swinney said Scott should be "immensely proud" of his career.

But the swimming star showed great humility by paying tribute to Hoy, after touching home in a time of 1.55.31 at La Defense Arena in the French capital behind Frenchman Leon Marchand who set a new Olympic record

His latest triumph comes after he powered Team GB to gold in the men's 4x200 metre freestyle relay earlier this week.

Scott's Team GB relay team-mate Tom Dean finished in fifth with a time of 1.56.46.

Most successful Scottish athlete

The University of Stirling athlete has now overtaken Sir Chris Hoy's tally of seven medals at the Olympics.

In 2018, he became the most successful Scottish athlete in a single Commonwealth Games when he took home six medals.

He was roared home to European gold in the 200m freestyle in front of a Glasgow home crowd that same year.

But the humble Scott brushed off comparisons between him and Hoy - insisting the cycling legend remains on another level.

He said: "Colour-wise, Chris Hoy is way out in front. I shouldn't be put in the same sentence as that guy.

"Sir Andy Murray just called it a day, what a career he's had as well.

"Those two are huge inspirations for anything that I've ever done."
