David Goodwillie released by Raith Rovers
The striker hasn't played for the club since his controversial signing earlier this year
Raith Rovers have released David Goodwillie from his contract eight months on from his controversial signing.
The club were embroiled in a raft of controversy following the January deadline day signing of the striker.
It all stemmed from Goodwillie being found to have raped a woman by a civil court in 2011.
Many supporters and sponsors, such as author Val McDermid, spoke of their outrage at the signing, with McDermid pulling her financial support from the team.
The women's side at the club rebranded and many fans refused to attend games.
A club statement on Friday read: “The club can confirm that David Goodwillie has been released from his contract with immediate effect. The club will make no further comment”.
Manager John McGlynn also apologised for the move back in February.
He said: "We just completely underestimated the depth of the feeling that has come from that signing.
"If we could turn the clock back we would.
"Here to apologise for bringing our football club, our supporters, into the situation that we find ourselves in".
