An Inverness school pupil has tested positive for coronavirus just a day after a staff member at another Highland school also tested positive.

Pupils at Dalneigh Primary who were in close contact with the affected child have been told to self-isolate for two weeks.

Highland Council sent two letters to parents of pupils, one of which was to those children in close contact with the affected child.

The letter from Dalneigh Primary's Headteacher said: 'We have been advised by NHS Highland’s Health Protection Team (HPT) that there has been a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the school.

'We have followed the national guidance and we have identified that your child has been in close contact with the affected child.

'In line with the national guidance we recommend that your child now stay at home and self-isolate until 2nd September which is 14 days following their last contact.

'We are asking you to do this to reduce the further spread of COVID 19 to others in the community.

'If your child is well at the end of the 14 day period of self-isolation, then they can return to usual activities.

'Other members of your household can continue normal activities provided your child does not develop symptoms within the 14 day self-isolation period.'

Highland Council say they are working closely with NHS Highland.

Chief Executive Donna Manson, said: 'I would like to thank parents for their understanding, patience and support.

'Our priority is to ensure as safe a learning environment as possible for all our staff, pupils and visitors.

'To do this, we are working closely with our partners in NHS Highland; schools are taking the appropriate measures and are following national guidance and public health advice.'

NHS Highland say they are continually monitoring the situation.

Dr Tim Allison, Director of Public Health said: 'National guidance has been followed and all close contacts of the confirmed case have been identified and advised to stay at home and self-isolate for 14 days.

'We are aware that positive cases can cause some local anxiety in the community. Please be reassured that our Health Protection Team is working closely with colleagues within the Highland Council to continually monitor the situation.

'Strict control measures are in place at the school and there is currently no evidence of transmission within the school itself.

'The school remains open and, unless they have been identified as a close contact, your child should continue to attend if they remain well. Children and staff should not attend school if they develop any of the common symptoms.'

It was confirmed yesterday that a staff member at Kilmylies Primary had received a positive test for COVID-19.

The school said she had not been in close contact with children at the school since Friday.

Highland Council say relevant areas in the school have been cleaned.
