A controversial decision on 16 new homes near Culloden Battlefield has been deferred by a Highland Council planning committee.

The application by Kirkwood Homes was at Viewhill - within the boundary of the Culloden Conservation Area and Historic Scotland’s Inventory of Historic Battlefields.

The committee wants the developer to revisit the finishes expecting the house designs to better reflect the Highland context and conservation area, in particular with regard to the use of external materials.

Back in 2014, permission was secured for the new properties at Viewhill and a new design and layout of the homes was up for approval on Tuesday.

Aberdeen-based Kirkwood Homes say the news is "extremely disappointing" but they'll discuss the outcome with the planning department to understand the specific reasons.

Kirkwood Homes say they'll continue to work alongside Highland Council "until a conclusion is reached”

A small protest was held at Highland Council's headquarters prior to Tuesday's meeting, with almost 75,000 people signing an online petition in opposition to the development
