Man dies in Ben Nevis accident

17 others rescued in operation needing two helicopters

A 28-year-old man has died and 17 other climbers have been rescued from the UK's highest mountain, Ben Nevis.

Mountain rescue teams and coastguard rescue helicopters from Inverness and Prestwick were involved in the mission to the mountain near Fort William following an emergency call received at around 2.15pm on Tuesday (18th March).

The man was declared dead at the scene and two others, aged 29 and 37, were taken to hospital.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.15pm on Tuesday, 8 March, police were made aware of concerns for a number of people in difficulty on Ben Nevis.

“Emergency services and mountain rescue colleagues attended to assist 17 people off the mountain.

"We can confirm that a 28-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, whilst a further two men, aged 29 and 27, were treated for minor injuries in hospital.

A coastguard rescue helicopter was scrambled from its base at Inverness, and a second aircraft from Prestwick was called in to assist.

Detectives say that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a report was being sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
