Chainsaw incident leaves man fighting for his life

73-year-old airlifted for treatment on arm and chest injuries

An elderly man is in a serious condition in hospital after a reported chainsaw attack on a couple in Fort William. The 73-year-old was flown to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment to arm and chest injuries following the incident in Glenkingie Street in the Caol area at about 8.30pm on Tuesday. Police said the man is in a serious but stable condition while a woman in her sixties - thought to be the male victim's wife - was released from Belford Hospital in Fort William after treatment. A 49-year-old man was detained in connection with the incident and police said he has been reported to the procurator fiscal over the disturbance. A spokesman said: "Emergency services attended an address at Glenkingie Street in the Caol area of Fort William following a report of a disturbance" "Inquiries into the incident are ongoing and police would like to thank members of the community for their assistance.''
