Celtic and Rangers have issued 'stay at home' messages to supporters ahead of next weekend's Old Firm clash.

Both clubs have been in talks with the Government and Police after fears the game could be cancelled.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned it could be at risk after crowds of Rangers fans gathered at Ibrox and George Square to celebrate their title win.

Rangers were first to post a video message on Saturday, with captain James Tavernier addressing supporters.

He said on their twitter: "I want to send a message for all Rangers fans. Thank you for you support over the last week.

"We have another huge week ahead, the second on Thursday the the Old Firm at Parkhead on Sunday.

"As captain of Rangers it is a huge privilege to represent the best fans in the world. I want to highlight how important it is for you to all stay at home next weekend.

"Please don't gather in crowds especially near the city centre or the stadium.

"We want nothing more than to have you with us next Sunday but we know you are right behind us.

"The best place to support us is from home. Stay home, stay safe."

Celtic soon followed with a video message from interim boss John Kennedy.

He said: He said: "For us and for everyone it's about staying home and being safe, and sticking to the rules and legislation.

"It's difficult for everyone. It's a difficult period for society as a whole, but especially surrounding the game and the attention it brings.

"We want to make sure that everybody does the right thing and stays at home.

"It's been difficult. We've all been feeling it, the players not being able to celebrate with the fans.

"In the last year we've had Nine in a Row and a quadruple treble, and it's been difficult not being able to celebrate that success together.

"But credit to the fans, they've stuck by the rules and celebrated in the safest way possible.

"It's difficult but that's the situation we're in and we just have to deal with it.

"It's been a massive loss for us. The fans give us so much support. Hopefully in the near future we'll get everybody back where they belong.

"The message is stay safe, stay at home, be with your families and enjoy the game on TV."
