A woman had to be rescued in Loch Ness last night after her car came off the road and into the water.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene, near Invermoriston, shortly before 8pm, after reports of a woman in the water.

It's understood that her car careered down an embankment from the A82 and into the freezing Loch.

Loch Ness RNLI were called out to the scene but were stood down en route as the driver was recovered from the water.

It's not yet known if the woman suffered any injuries as a result of the crash.

Loch Ness RNLI volunteer crew member Neil Stebbings says:"We responded with our specialist casualty handling equipment. It was totally dark and the water was extremely cold so it was vital to get to the scene as quickly and safely as possible to contribute to the combined rescue efforts."
