The Brother and five friends of William Reid who was from Edinburgh and studied in Aberdeen are to run a marathon today to raise money for charity in his memory.

Reid died in January last year in a skiing accident in the French Alps, he was a trainee surgeon.

William graduated from Aberdeen Medical School with a Bachelor of Medicine and a BSC in Sports Science in 2018.

He was just weeks away from finding out whether he would be accepted onto the Scottish orthopaedic training programme.

In the weeks following his death his family managed to raise funds to build a school in Zambia named after William, he'd visited the country in 2013 and been shocked by what he'd seen at a local orphanage.

Now Brother Cameron and some friends are to take up the running challenge to raise more money, which will be split between the Zambian charity Barakas - who will use the funds to equip a library down the road from the school - and Edinburgh homelessness charity the Cyrenians.

They've already raised over ten thousand pounds, with a target of 11,000 pounds.

Cameron Reid told us:

"He (William) planned to go out there and do some work in his capacity of being a doctor"

"Since he visited in 2013 he'd been in contact quite a lot"

On visiting the African country Cameron said:

"He was really struck by it, I think the conditions there versus the conditions here"

The runners for the marathon are split up around the UK.

Cameron and his friend Jonathan Barclay will run in Edinburgh, while others will be completing their marathons in Inverness, Glasgow and London.

Although Cameron and Jonathan admit they are the least experienced runners out of the group, they hope knowing the good causes they are doing it for will spur them on.

Jonathan said:

"I think out of the six of us we are probably the least experienced, two of them have run at least one marathon, one of them is run about three and another has run a marathon in marrakech of all places"

"I think they are aiming somewhere under three hours, I think Cammy and I will be happy with four and a half."
