Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports came through just before 1pm.
Police say the road is "likely to be closed for some time."
A statement on social media said: "The A9 is currently closed around five miles north of Aviemore following a two car crash that happened around 12.50pm.
"Emergency services are at the scene.
"Traffic is being diverted via Carrbridge and the road is likely to be closed for some time."
Traffic Scotland confirmed investigation works are ongoing.
They said: "#A9 at Boat of Garten remains closed in both directions following an earlier collision whilst investigation works continue."
