The lay off of workers is being blamed on a downturn in oil and gas business.

Global Energy is laying off 30 workers at its Nigg yard on the Cromarty Firth.

The decision is being blamed on a downturn in oil and gas business.

The firm is one of the largest employers in the Highlands.

It's submitted plans to create a new harbour in the waterway, which it claims will bring in new contracts.

A spokesman for Global Energy Group said, “We can confirm that due to a general downturn in oil and gas business we have regretfully had to let some staff go.

"The cyclical nature of some projects in the Cromarty Firth entails staff numbers rising and falling in line with customer demand and, as we have been seeing, this is true of many other companies working within this marketplace.

"However, Global Energy Group continues to provide employment for thousands of workers in the region, and the long-term prospects for the area’s economy will be strong if all parties involved in the Cromarty Firth work together to develop facilities offering customers the capacity, choice and full range of services needed in order to attract projects of a scale not currently carried out in the area.

"Our current application for a Harbour Order Revision will go a long way to assist us in our strategy in looking to secure more long term contacts and bring more continuity to the cyclical contracts we currently attract to the Cromarty Firth.”
