Multiple highly skilled engineering jobs are being created in Moray to support the four Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon Squadrons.

Based at RAF Lossiemouth, 20 roles will support the maintenance service and availability of the combat aircraft in north-east Scotland, one of two RAF Quick Reaction Alert (QRA), stations which protect UK airspace around the clock.

The new arrangement will ensure a dedicated and local engineering team are on hand to support critical operations based permanently at RAF Lossiemouth, removing the need for a maintenance team to travel from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

It will also free up RAF personnel to perform other critical tasks and enhance the maintenance capability on the frontline.

John Jack from BAE Systems came on-board last May to establish the Moray team:

"They (the MoD and RAF) were very keen to support the Typhoon force up here in Scotland and initiative is aimed at easing the maintenance burden on the front-line squadrons allowing them further time on other activities they have to do"

"Some of the team are actually ex-RAF so the main focus is for them to handle anything outwith the capability or capacity of the front line squadron to enhance the delivery of aircraft"

"We support the 'forward available fleet' with body modifications, specialist testing, etc and we go through rigorous training, refresher courses and continuous assessment to keep us competent and safe"

"That regimented scheduled maintenance, anti-deterioration checks, it effectively gives the aircraft an MOT on an annual basis"

"I was based up here back in 1987 when they were still operating Buccaneers, and the investment, development and growth is phenomenal compared to when I was here first at RAF Lossiemouth"

"It's a really exciting time with the Poseidon P8 and also the recent E7 Wedgetail, so there's a real buzz and excitement about the opportunities and potential here at the base"

"We're also looking at apprentices to invest in the local area and look at recruitment here in the area and get people to continue their employment with BAE living and working in the Lossiemouth area"
