Eighteen people had to be evacuated following a chemical leak at a swimming pool in Wick yesterday.

Fire crews were sent in to the Burn Street pool just before 4pm after a small chemical spillage was reported within the plant room.

The pool was closed for over an hour while emergency crews assessed the scene in breathing apparatus and cleared the spillage.

Incident Commander, Group Manager Mark Loynd, said: “The quantity of spilled chemical was relatively small and at no time was there any risk to anyone in the vicinity.

“High Life Highland staff did an excellent job evacuating the pool and the premises. No one was injured and no one required medical attention.

“Our crews quickly contained the substance so there was no environmental risk.”
