The Masked Singer makes MAJOR rule change
Turns out viewers are almost TOO GOOD at guessing
Last updated 27th Jan 2022
Alongside trying to juggle our busy lives, we’re spending A LOT of our free time guessing the identities of the celebrities under the masks on The Masked Singer.
As well as judges Davina McCall, Rita Ora, Mo Gilligan and Jonathan Ross trying to guess the subtle clues in each performance, The Masked Singer fans seem to go even further when it comes to guessing who is underneath the masks.
Social media is often set alight with theories during and after every single show and a couple of weeks ago, comedian Rob Beckett even got in trouble for joking about being Traffic Cone.
The podcast host and Celebs Go Dating narrator sent out a tweet during Traffic Cone’s performance saying he was the one under the mask.
He later apologised, tweeting: 'Right so I have a confession. I’m not Traffic Cone. It’s a wind up. However it’s got so out of hand the actual Traffic Cone has angrily messaged me telling me to stop saying I’m traffic cone. So for the record, I’m not Traffic Cone. But I now know who is. #MaskedSingerUK.’
The tighter rules have come out after the show ‘learnt their lesson’ after fans were able to discover the identity of The Fox during last year’s series after a seemingly innocent clue that the celeb inside the costume collected teapots.
Viewers quickly took to Google and found out Denise Van Outen had a hobby collecting teapots, and unmasked her as The Fox.
Show creator Derek McLean told The Daily Star: "We thought it was a great clue and no one would pick up on it. Turns out if you Google ‘Denise Van Outen and teapots’ it’s there in loads of articles.
“It was a massive learning curve. Everything is findable. If you think you can Google the answer now it’s not going to be there.”
He also likened the clues on the show to being like “a crossword in The Telegraph”.
Derek also added that fans have already guessed A LOT of the characters on the current series already, adding: “More names are out there on social media this year than last year. People have cracked many of them.”
Turns out, viewers of The Masked Singer are so good at figuring out the cryptic clues that show bosses are doing everything they can to make sure they keep the celebrities under the masks a secret for as long as possible.
