Netflix's series The Crown is one of the streaming services' hugely popular shows, and as fans eagerly await the fifth series coming out, it looks as though we could be getting a prequel show.

Although the show has not officially been given the green light, the show's creators are in talks about creating the prequel series.

The Crown has so far followed the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, from her marriage in 1947 and the death of her father King George VI in 1952, through to the early 1990s, and this new show would take place in the years leading up to these events.

There is speculation from the Daily Mail that the prequel would pick up from the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, and continue through to the abdication of Edward VIII, which has been touched on in The Crown so far.

If this was the case, there would certainly be a lot to cover, as the series would have almost 50 years of history to explore including the reign of four different Kings, World Wars I and II, and the Spanish Flu epidemic.

In the meantime, The Crown is set to have a fifth and sixth series, which will continue the story through to modern-day. The fifth series will see actress Imelda Stauton take on the role of the Queen and portray her as an older woman.

We have seen Her Majesty played through the decades by Claire Foy and Olivia Coleman so far, and Imelda spoke to This Morning about taking on the role, saying: "I'm following two extraordinary actresses, but I'm also following one extraordinary human being, which is the Queen."

"Because she's so much in a lot of our lives and we know how she looks and how she sounds. Of course, I have to be like her as much as I can, but also I have to tell a story and a story of the day, whatever that is."

The next series of The Crown is expected to cover more of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's relationship and divorce, as well as Diana's tragic death in 1997.

Filming for the upcoming series started in September 2021 and series five of The Crown is set to premiere in November 2022 on Netflix. You can catch up with seasons one to four on the streaming site now.
