Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has had an exhilarating couple of months, with the show quickly becoming one of Netflix's biggest successes of all time, as well as the recent exciting news that the show is OFFICIALLY returning for a second season. And now, Hwang has teased fans with the alternate ending he considered for the first season.

It seems that Squid Game, the show that gained over 111 million views in just 28 days, could have ended a little bit differently, with Hwang revealing that he "wrestled" between the idea of Seong Gi-Hun getting on his plane to visit his daughter, or turning around and seeking revenge on the game organisers.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Hwang said: "We actually wrestled between two different scenarios for the ending. There was one, the other alternate ending, where Gi-hun would get on the plane and leave. And then there was of course the one where he would turn back and walk towards the camera."

The show creator continued: "We constantly asked ourselves, is it really right for Gi-hun to make the decision to leave and go see his family, to pursue his own happiness? Is that the right way for us to really propose the question or the message that we wanted to convey through the series?"

Explaining why they decided to go with the ending they did, which saw Seong ditch his flight in order to seek revenge, Hwang admitted: "We came to the conclusion that the question that we wanted to propose cannot be done if he left on the plane.

"The question that we want to answer – why has the world come to what it is now? – can only be answered or can only be proposed if Gi-hun turned back and walked towards the camera. So that's how we ended up with that ending in the finale."

Although the idea of Seong finally seeing his daughter again warms our hearts, we can't help be thankful that Hwang decided to go with the ending that he did, as it's fair to say that it set us up for series two pretty perfectly.

This comes just days after it was officially confirmed that Squid Game would be returning for a second series, after Hwang previously hinted that it wasn't on the cards.

Series one of Squid Game is available to watch on Netflix now, with season two officially confirmed.
