Iconic Australian soap Neighbours, which was axed in 2022, celebrated 37 years on air and nearly 9,000 episodes before ending. However, a few months after the show ended, its revival was announced by Amazon Freevee, with many favourite characters signing up for the new show.

The show was added to the free streaming service on Monday 18th September, and despite the show ending 14 months ago, viewers get to see a two-year time jump between the original series and the new show.

The new series of Neighbours

Back in August 2023, a month ahead of the new series' release, fans were given a trailer showing a little of what was in store for them, and it gave fans a glimpse of the drama and scandals to be featured in the show, ending with a wedding to remember.

New episodes of Neighbours will be released daily to UK viewers from Monday to Thursday each week on Amazon Freevee.

Before the release of the show, Jason Herbison, Neighbours' executive producer, said: "All the cast and crew are incredibly excited that Ramsay Street will officially welcome viewers again to the neighbourhood on 18 September in the UK and Australia, and also be introduced to brand new audiences in the US and Canada when the new chapter of Neighbours is unveiled."

Some of the show's main characters have returned, including Paul Robinson (played by Stefan Dennis), Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher), Toadfish (Ryan Moloney), and Susan Kennedy (Jackie Woodburne), in a series which has been described as a 'continuation of the long-running daily drama series'.

Neighbours was also known for its famous alumni such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Natalie Imbruglia and Margot Robbie, all of which reprised their roles in the final episode.

Why is there a two-year time jump in Neighbours?

Neighbours' executive producer Jason Herbison explained to press the reason behind the time jump, saying: "(It) was decided very early on, when we were having talks with Amazon."We knew there was going to be a transmission gap, so life for the audience would have gone on and time would have passed for them too.

"It just felt like a one-off opportunity. In serial dramas, there aren't a lot of things you can do for the first time.

"Of course, other soaps have done time jumps, but in our case, we were actually going to have been off air as well. We felt that it was a great opportunity – and two years felt like a really nice timeline."

Who is in the cast of Neighbours?

Many of the fan favourites such as Toadie, Karl and Susan Kennedy and Paul Robinson have returned for the new series Neighbours, we also get to meet some new characters such as the Varga-Murphys and Mischa Barton's character Reece.
