Why were Gavin & Stacey's Pam and Mick spotted filming at Barry Island?

Could a reunion be on the cards? We finally have answers

Author: Alex RossPublished 27th Feb 2023

Ever since the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special back in 2019, fans of the hit sitcom have been holding out for news of an official reunion, with many urging writers James Corden and Ruth Jones to create another series. After starring characters Mick (Larry Lamb) and Pam (Alison Steadman) were spotted filming on Barry Island, a whirlwind of reunion rumours flooded the internet.

Although James Corden said back in 2020 that there's 'no plans' for any future series, Rob Brydon hinted in 2021 that there could be one more episode coming our way, but up until now we've been feeding off scraps - HOWEVER, we now have answers as to why Larry and Alison were spotted filming together... Finally!

Why were Pam and Mick filming on Barry Island?

Back in June 2022, Gavin & Stacey fans went into meltdown after actors Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb (AKA Pam and Mick), were spotted filming at the one and only Barry Island.

After the snap of the pair chilling on deck chairs landed on Twitter, speculation was of course rife, with many wondering if the hilarious pair were filming.

One wrote: 'Better be a whole season and not just a special', with another writing: 'I could scream'. A third then added: 'Love Pamela’s cup. Fingers crossed for another spec or maybe season 4'.

Due to the lack of production crew, sadly, it was suspect that it had nothing to do with any new episodes of Gavin & Stacey. Now, we officially have answers, with it being revealed that the pair were in fact filming a new show.

Is there going to be another series of Gavin & Stacey?

It might not be the news Gavin & Stacey fans were wanting, but it doesn't look like we have any new episodes heading our way any time soon.

It's not all bad news, however, as it has been confirmed that Larry and Alison were filming a brand new upcoming travel series! The show will them back to Essex and Wales, and will see the pair revisit the iconic road trip from Billericay to Barry.

UKTV revealed that the new show will air on comedy channel Gold later in 2023.

What will the show be called?

The show is titled Alison & Larry: Billericay to Barry, and will follow the much-loved pair as they tale the long trip, and stop off at special spots along the way.

On the show, Alison said: "I can't wait to take this trip down memory lane to explore Pam and Mick's neck of the woods, as well as so many other locations precious to me. And who better to do it with than Larry! I'm so excited to be reunited."

The show is sure to bring back some Gavin & Stacey nostalgia, with Larry adding: "I am really looking forward to reminiscing with Alison whilst taking the trip from Billericay to Barry, it was such a huge part in the plot of Gavin and Stacey. This journey holds a special place in my heart and I hope the fans are pleased with it."

How many episodes will there be?

The series will comprise of three episodes, as the pair visit plenty of beautiful, sentimental spots on the 210 mile journey. But that's not all, with UKTV reporting that they will take part in activities set to 'unleash their inner Pam and Mick', and even meet up with old friends from Gavin & Stacey along the way.

Alison & Larry: Billericay to Barry release date

Although there is no set release date for the three-episode series just yet, UKTV reports that it will be with us later this year.

When was the last series of Gavin & Stacey?

Although it wasn't a full series, the last instalment of Gavin & Stacey arrived on Christmas Day in 2019, where Nessa (Ruth Jones) proposed to Smithy (James Corden), leaving fans on a total cliff-hanger as the titles rolled.

Previous to that, Gavin & Stacey enjoyed three series, airing between 2007-2010.

Earlier this year it was announced that James Corden had decided to leave his current role on The Late Late Show, once his one-year contract extension runs out in 2023.

Nothing has been confirmed by the comedian, however that doesn't stop us all holding out hope!

In the meantime, you can watch old episodes of Gavin & Stacey on BBC iPlayer.
